Loofah: the natural and sustainable sponge.

And it is that we had to dedicate a post to the Loofah, this vegetable sponge that will change your life and that of the Planet. Reduce waste and you have the same result as a conventional sponge.

This plant, from the Cucurbitaceae family (pumpkins, courgettes, cucumbers…) grows very well in Tenerife. It practically does not need water but it does need a lot of sun and warm temperatures. We call it the star of the southern midlands.

Its fruits, which will be used as luffa sponges/scouring pads, can measure up to 40 cm long and depending on the variety you have, you will get larger or smaller luffas.

Let’s see what the varieties are.

The varieties that we know are three:

  • Loofah acutangula: its fruit can measure between 20 and 25 cm.
  • Loofah aegyptiaca: its fruit is the largest of all the varieties. It can measure up to 30 cm.
  • Loofah cylindrica: its fruit is the smallest. Less than luffa acutangula.

We encourage you to try them, they are wonderful and once they get old you can bury them or deposit them in your compost bin.

We have different sizes and if you have questions do not hesitate, we will be happy to answer you.

Thank you Loofah for existing!

We hope you liked it.
